you only get to see the light one time in your life

There are a few artistes that I have not dared to touch on although they were a very huge part of my music listening history. Putting on Tori, The Cure, Bowie, Pulp, Smiths and other alternative bands on before I did my homework back in secondary school was a common routine then, putting on magic to fill the air after a day at school.

And magical all these music were. Effectively shaping the kind of music for my ears in the future. Well to put it this way, Oasis and Blur were the two big Britpop bands around then, but Pulp was always sort of an undercurrent that surfaced from time to time with hits like ' Common People' that managed to be played a lot in the mainstream. I remember borrowing Pulp from my brother's cd collection one day and did not really like it, but eventually, play after play, I found I rather actually liked them, and Pulp eventually displaced Oasis as
my brit band of choice.

' Black magic' is about the moments in your life that happen just once inawhile if you are lucky, that " blows your mind away/ and brings you places you want to stay", that lights up bits of your mind and world whether you like it or not, forcing you to change the way you look at things after. The ringing bells, distortion, Pulpy keyboards, layered with that unmistakable voice somehow lends a sensitive sincerity to the whole subject, and Jarvis somehow manages to sneak in a streak of optimism into something that is concerning life changing epiphanies to be lived for.

There is one thing I have to disagree with the lyrics though. Moments like these do not come " just once - in your life". Sometimes it does not have to be single earth shattering things that causes one to see things in a different light. Rather, seemingly random and unconnected ' small' experiences can subtly alter many things as much as one single concentrated of black magic.

Like songs, every choice made, probably decides something later.
